Harmony Retirement Living

Specialised Alzheimer's Care in Las Vegas, Nevada

Receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis — whether for yourself or a loved one — changes everything. In the early stages, the changes may be subtle. Over time, they become profound. Families in Las Vegas navigating Alzheimer’s disease often describe a journey of love, exhaustion, difficult decisions, and an urgent need to find care that truly understands the
condition.

At Harmony Retirement Living, Alzheimer’s care is not a department or a wing — it is our entire focus. Every aspect of our home, our staffing model, our daily routines, and our physical environment has been designed with Alzheimer’s in mind. We understand that Alzheimer’s is not just memory loss: it is a whole-person condition that affects behaviour, communication, physical function, and emotional life.

Understanding Alzheimer's Disease and What Care Requires

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60–80% of all dementia cases. It is a progressive neurological condition that destroys memory and other important mental functions by damaging the connections between brain cells and eventually causing cell death.
The disease progresses through several stages — from mild cognitive impairment, through moderate decline with significant memory gaps and personality changes, to severe Alzheimer’s where full-time care is required for every basic function. Effective Alzheimer’s care must be adapted to the individual’s current stage and must evolve as the disease progresses.
At Harmony Retirement Living, we conduct a thorough initial assessment and build a care plan that addresses each resident’s specific stage, history, triggers, preferences, and family dynamics. We revisit and update that plan regularly.

Our Alzheimer's Care Approach

Structured Daily Routines

People living with Alzheimer's thrive on consistency. Predictable routines — waking, meals, activities, rest — reduce confusion, anxiety, and agitation significantly. Our days are purposefully structured while remaining flexible enough to honour individual rhythms.

Secure, Safe Environment

Our home is designed to prevent wandering — one of the most dangerous behaviours associated with Alzheimer's — while maintaining a warm, homelike atmosphere free from the institutional feel of larger facilities. Residents have freedom of movement within a safe, monitored space.

Cognitive Stimulation Programmes

Purposeful engagement is central to quality of life in Alzheimer's care. Our daily activities — ranging from reminiscence therapy and life story sharing, to music, baking, and crafts — are designed to activate memory, promote self-esteem, and reduce isolation.

Behaviour Management

Alzheimer's frequently brings behavioural changes — agitation, sleep disturbances, sundowning, repetitive questions, and emotional volatility. Our trained caregivers use evidence-based, non-pharmacological techniques to manage these behaviours gently and effectively.

Family Communication

We keep families informed and involved. Regular updates, open-door policies, and collaborative care reviews ensure that the people who know and love the resident most remain central to their care.

Personal Hygiene & Incontinence Care

Delivered with dignity and respect, using gentle, person-centred techniques

Staff Training for Alzheimer's Care

Our caregivers complete a rigorous and ongoing training programmes specifically designed for Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Training areas include: Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease courses, fundamentals of caregiving, resident safety and fall prevention, medication management and assistance, resident privacy and dignity, mental illness and behavioural health, fire safety and emergency evacuation, CPR and first aid certification.

We believe that training is not a one-time event — it is a continuous process. Our staff participate in refresher courses and continuing education to remain at the leading edge of Alzheimer’s care practice.

FAQs

We got answers to your questions

What is the difference between Alzheimer's care and general dementia care?
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but dementia is an umbrella term that includes Vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, and others. Alzheimer’s care is a subset of dementia care, with specific strategies for the memory and behavioural patterns associated with Alzheimer’s progression. At Harmony, we care for residents with all types of dementia.
At what stage of Alzheimer's should someone move to a care home?
There is no single ‘right’ moment, but common indicators include: significant safety concerns at home, caregiver exhaustion, frequent wandering, aggressive or unmanageable behaviour, inability to perform basic self-care, and loss of the ability to communicate effectively. We offer free consultations to help families make this assessment.
How do you handle difficult Alzheimer's behaviours like aggression or sundowning?

Our trained caregivers use non-pharmacological approaches first: redirecting attention, adjusting the environment, maintaining familiar routines, and using calm, reassuring communication. We document behavioural patterns carefully and work with attending physicians when medical intervention is appropriate.

Is Harmony Retirement Living licensed to care for Alzheimer's patients in Nevada?

Yes. We are fully licensed by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services to provide residential memory care, including specialised Alzheimer’s care. Copies of our licence are available upon request.
